Sysinternals.com has been a source of great utilities for many years and in the recent past has been acquired by Microsoft. A utility that many in the industry are aware of and may have used is bginfo. Bginfo lists key information about a PCs configuration and setup on the desktop. This is particularly useful when using a KVM or other means to switch between many PCs. You can pick from a wide variety of parameters to display and order them in a way that you find useful. For example:

The example shows two custom fields, owner and phone. You can add whatever information that is important.
